Day 4: Austere visage
Great progress painting the shed, the exterior is almost finished. I'll just leave it there and let someone else finish the work.
Terrible progress painting the game, though Seilburg seems productive out of sight. At least I made a good start on a BSP map generator (pictured without the doors, which are the hard part to get right - the rest worked first time without even a parse error).
But then... I wanted to decorate the map. Since he's got a clue about this 3D stuff I got Seilburg to create some simple 3D models for more interesting walls and I offered to texture them -- of course I know better than to derail the project by trying to learn Blender. But then he had me install Blender in order to preview the texturing instead of doing it blind! That didn't go well, but finally after great struggle, I had drawn one texture.
That was such a time waster that I decided there must be a better way. So next I tried Goxel for drawing voxel models. It was easy and fairly featureful. But that wasn't a good solution because the result is a mess of multiple mesh chunks with each voxel face an individual quad. There's a Blender plugin to simplify and bake a texture but I wanted simple not Blender.
Conclusion: 3D is hard, probably a bad idea for a 7DRL if you have no experience.
